Opening
Have you ever known that you needed to protect someone even though you did not understand everything that was happening? Saint Joseph faced a moment like that. He said little, but his choices revealed a very courageous heart.
The story
Matthew's Gospel says that Joseph was deeply troubled when he learned that Mary was expecting a child. He did not want to hurt or shame her. After an angel told him that the child came from God, Joseph welcomed Mary into his home and named the child Jesus. By doing this, he accepted the responsibility of being a father and protecting the child.
When King Herod sought to harm Jesus, Joseph immediately took the family to Egypt. Later he brought Mary and Jesus back to live in Nazareth. The Gospel calls Joseph a just man and tells us that he was a craftsman. It records none of his words; we see him listen and then act. Scripture also does not say when he died. Images of Joseph's old age or final days belong to tradition and art, not to events narrated in the Gospel.
Suggested reading: Matthew 1:18-25; 2:13-23 and Luke 2:1-52. Notice each time Joseph listens and then acts.
Virtue
Saint Joseph shows us that courage does not need to be loud. Sometimes courage means listening calmly, accepting responsibility, and faithfully caring for the people entrusted to us.
Is there someone at home or at school who needs you to listen and help without waiting for praise?
Today's action
Choose one small way to care for your family: tidy a corner, help an adult, give way to a younger child, or finish your responsibility without being reminded.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to listen like Saint Joseph, to do what is right with courage, and to care quietly for the people you place beside me. Amen.
