Prayer requires a choice.

Misconceptions view prayer as an escape from reality, merely a psychological state, or only valuable for its comforting feel. In reality, prayer is a relationship that requires time, discipline, and a struggle against ingrained habits of self-isolation.

Key point

Distraction reveals what is occupying our hearts; instead of panicking, gently return to it. A lack of focus can be an opportunity to love God for who He is, but it also requires a review of our faithfulness and any misplaced attachments.

I asked but haven't received anything yet.

God always hears, but the answer is not always what we expect. Prayer is purified in order to find the Kingdom of God, to receive what is truly good, and to cooperate instead of passively waiting for miracles.

Reflection

What usually causes me to skip prayer: busyness, distractions, disappointment, or feelings of unworthiness?

Practice

Setting a minimum rhythm that can last all day can be difficult: five minutes, at the same time and place. If you miss a day, start again immediately instead of giving up.

Prayer

Lord, grant me the trust of a child and the strength to remain with You in both the light and the dryness.
