Christ is with the sick.
Illness and suffering make people feel limited, fearful, and lonely. In the Gospels, Jesus is close to the sick; He heals them and shows that the Kingdom of God is triumphing over evil.
This sacrament is for those who are beginning to be in danger due to serious illness or old age; it can be received again when the illness worsens or another serious illness arises. It is not just a rite for the dying moments.
The grace of unity, peace, and courage.
Through the laying on of hands, prayer, and anointing with oil by the priest, the sick are united with the Passion of Christ, receiving peace, strength, and forgiveness when they cannot confess their sins. If it is beneficial for their salvation, they may also be restored to health.
Suggested reading: James 5:13-16. The community is invited to pray, and the elders anoint the sick in the name of the Lord.
Do I avoid patients out of fear, or do I know how to be present, listen, and help them receive the care they need?
Visit or call a sick person, ask about their actual needs, and pray with them if they agree.
