Love God with your whole being.
The first commandment invites us to believe in God, to trust in Him, to love Him above all else, and to worship Him. True faith does not exclude the question but refuses to deliberately close our hearts to the known truth.
An idol is any finite thing that is placed in a supreme position: money, power, achievement, self-image, another person, technology, or even one's own will.
Avoid superstition and the pursuit of false power.
Superstition attributes mechanical power to prayers, sacred objects, or rituals. Fortune telling and magic seek to control the future or unseen powers, contrary to trust in God.
Suggested reading: Matthew 4:1-11. Jesus resisted the temptations of need, fame, and power through obedience to the Word of God.
What takes up the most of my time, worries me the most, and requires the most sacrifice? Is it becoming an idol?
Set a specific limit on what is controlling you, and then dedicate the freed-up time or resources to prayer and service.
