Family, the first school of love.
Children are called to respect, be grateful to, reasonably obey, and care for their parents when needed. Parents have the responsibility to love, protect, educate in the faith, and respect their children's individual vocations, not to treat them as property.
Obedience does not compel a person to do something immoral, endure violence, or conceal danger. When safety is threatened, one should seek the help of a trustworthy adult and the appropriate agency.
Power to serve the common good
In society, legitimate authority must respect dignity, justice, and the common good. Citizens have a responsibility to participate, obey fair laws, and protest morally when commands clearly contradict divine law or fundamental rights.
What rights am I claiming while neglecting my corresponding responsibilities within my family or community?
Do a simple household chore without being asked, then express your gratitude specifically to the person who quietly takes care of you.
Lord, heal the brokenness in our families and help all those in authority to serve truth, justice, and the vulnerable.
