Begin early with the parish responsible for the file
Under the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Vietnam's 2024 regulations, a couple must complete marriage catechesis; a course ordinarily lasts from one to three months and may be shortened if the foundational content is still assured. Only a pastor or an institution approved by the local Ordinary may issue a certificate.
A valid certificate is recognized throughout the Church in Vietnam and does not expire. Completing this path in the app is not a certificate and does not replace the course, the premarital investigation, or parish accompaniment.
Documents, investigation, and publication of banns
Ordinarily, the parish where the marriage is celebrated prepares the file and investigates freedom to marry. Banns are usually published at three consecutive Sunday Masses; the competent authority may dispense from publication as the regulations provide. Scanned documents must be transmitted through the proper channels between the offices concerned.
Specific requirements may differ according to the diocese, place of residence, nationality, previous marriage, or sacramental status. Civil law must also be observed. Always confirm the document checklist and deadlines with the parish responsible for the file.
Does our file contain anything that will require extra time: residence in several places, living abroad, a baptismal certificate, a previous marriage, disparity of cult, or incomplete Christian initiation?
Contact the parish before fixing the date. Make a checklist that records who is responsible, where to obtain each document, its deadline, and the source that confirmed the requirement; do not send sensitive information through unofficial channels.
