Unity does not erase difference
To make a total gift is to invite the other person into your time, body, plans, possessions, and responsibilities. It does not permit possessiveness, surveillance, isolation, or demands that the other person abandon every healthy relationship.
Good communication does not mean always agreeing. It is the ability to state clearly what you observe, feel, need, and request, and then to listen in order to understand before responding.
Suggested reading: Philippians 2:1-5 and James 1:19-20. Unity grows when each person stops making everything about the self, is quick to hear, and slow to anger.
A weekly couple meeting
Accumulated small matters often create more distance than a single major event. A regular conversation about schedules, household work, finances, both families, intimacy, and spiritual life allows difficulties to be addressed while they are still small.
When the other person expresses a need, do I hear it as an accusation? What helps me remain curious instead of becoming defensive?
Try twenty minutes: one person speaks for five minutes; the other summarizes without correcting; switch roles; then each person proposes one small step that can be taken during the week.
