The promise fulfilled
In Confirmation, the laying on of hands, anointing with sacred chrism, and words of sealing signify the gift of the Holy Spirit. The recipient is bound more closely to the Church and strengthened to bear witness to Christ.
Confirmation is not a coming-of-age ceremony or a diploma from catechism class. The sacrament imprints an indelible character, deepens baptismal identity, and calls the recipient to a life of mission.
Suggested reading: Acts 8:14-17; Galatians 5:22-25. The gift of the Holy Spirit must bear concrete fruit in character and relationships.
Charisms for the common good
The Spirit gives different gifts, not for self-exaltation but for building up the community. Discerning charisms requires the Word of God, the teaching of the Church, good fruit, and wise accompaniment.
Where do I need the Spirit's strength to bear witness: in my family, at work, among friends, or in the face of an injustice?
Come, Holy Spirit; renew my mind and make the gifts you have given me a service to the common good.
