Let God see and heal

The period of proximate preparation ordinarily coincides with Lent, deeper prayer, the scrutinies for catechumens, and the presentations of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer. This is not a public examination, but a time for the truth of the Gospel to touch whatever remains bound.

Key point

No one should proceed to the sacraments merely because a wedding date has been set, guests have been invited, or embarrassment is feared. When serious questions involve faith, freedom, marital status, or one's way of life, speak about them early so that discernment and support can be offered.

Scripture

Suggested reading: John 4:5-42; John 9:1-41; John 11:1-44. The three great Gospels of this period reveal Christ as living water, light, and life.

Different preparation for each person

The scrutinies belong specifically to catechumens; baptized candidates prepare through repentance and Reconciliation as directed. Sponsors and the community bear witness and offer support, but they do not replace the candidate's decision of conscience.

Reflection

What am I still concealing because I fear that the journey will be delayed? What freedom might telling the truth make possible?

Practice

Conduct a review with your companion: faith, prayer, moral life, present or previous marriages, community, godparent or sponsor, and unresolved questions.
