Created good and with a purpose

God freely creates in wisdom and love. Every person, body and soul, possesses an inalienable dignity because each is created in the image of God and called to communion with him.

Key point

Sin is not something God created. It is the free creature's rejection of God's love and good order; sin wounds our relationship with God, others, ourselves, and the world.

Scripture

Suggested reading: Genesis 1:26-31; 3:1-15; Romans 5:12-21. Sin does not have the final word; the grace of Christ does.

Responsibility without despair

Original sin describes humanity's state of deprivation of original holiness; it is not the personal fault of a newborn child. Each person still has freedom and responsibility, but needs grace to heal and sustain them.

Reflection

Do I tend to deny responsibility, condemn myself, or blame others? What different perspective does faith in mercy open for me?

Practice

Notice one choice that is harming a relationship. Write down the good I truly desire, the wound that needs healing, and the first step toward making amends.
